Accessing the Barren Island Volcano
There are two ways that you can travel from Port Blair to Barren Island.
- Ferry Services: To visit this remarkable Andaman volcano, there are ferry services available from Port Blair, operating three times a week. The cost varies depending on the service provider. Since landing on the island is not allowed, visitors can charter a boat for a distant view of the volcano.
- Seaplane: Some service providers also offer seaplane tours for an aerial view, adding a unique perspective to the experience. Carry the necessary documents, as the seaplane tours have a lot of rules and regulations that you need to adhere to.
Duration of the Visit
Setting out early in the morning is recommended to reduce exposure to the sun, given that the total duration of the trip can span approximately 10 to 12 hours. Service providers typically commence their boat departures between 4 and 5 a.m., ensuring that you return to Port Blair before 4 p.m. It's important to note that in the event of volcanic activity or unexpected weather shifts, the duration of the journey may extend slightly.
Optimal Season to Visit
November to February are the best months to visit the Barren Island Volcano. During these months, the climate on Barren Islands is neither too hot nor too rainy, making it ideal for ferry and plane rides. This period also coincides with the reopening of various water activities in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which you can enjoy once you are done with your island tour.
Fishing Near Barren Island
Barren Island is a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts. Private instructors offer guided fishing excursions in the waters surrounding the island. These waters teem with diverse marine life, including tuna. The instructors generally provide all necessary equipment for the activities. Fishing with the backdrop of a volcano in the sea is definitely a wonderful experience.
